A Christmas Note from Ruth

As Christmas nears, and our holiday season winds down, we're taking a moment to reflect on the past couple months. We asked Ruth to write a reflection, and she blew us away with her words. To preface this, we should mention that a year ago, Ground Up was just the 2 founders, with Ruth helping out as an intern. This season, we have a whole team of women behind the company, and Ruth acting as a mentor for the women on our team. Women from diverse backgrounds, who are transitioning out of homelessness, sex trafficking and other adverse situations. Just a few months ago, many of these women didn't know each other. So when we say "team" it's a very new thing for us.... and we can't wait to see how it grows!

The weeks leading up to the holidays are often a contradiction to the usual cheer and festivities of Christmas. Looming stress of creating the perfect gift; cooking the perfect meal; planning the perfect event… wait, Christmas is in a week?? Oftentimes we’re so busy helping others celebrate that we forget to invite ourselves to the party.

I’m endlessly grateful to work in a business whose focus is on empowerment. There is no bigger energy boost for me than working alongside other strong, independent, resourceful women. If someone is stressed, we all reach out, listen, remind them to take a break. If someone is cold, we rotate in relation to proximity to the space heater- cold hands aren’t happy hands! If someone can’t shake the problems of outside life, we listen. A safe haven isn’t always a party, but it’s something to celebrate.

Christmas isn’t the easiest time for someone who doesn’t have a home. I’m blown away by this team’s ability to adjust and support each individual. Not only do we come into work prepared to tackle giant orders in a small space, we have adopted a culture of meeting each individual where they’re at: nothing helps relieve the pressure of work more than the presence of a friend.

December is lonely for someone who is out of touch with their family, their life, their self. Coming together over 300 jars of peanut butter is unconventional, sure, but we absolutely get stuff done. Everything we worked at this holiday season has never been accomplished by Ground Up PDX before! We’re pioneering a process. The chaos of Christmas was promptly conquered by the resourcefulness of a small, sassy, SMART group of women. The best part is, we killed it while helping support and teach one another. No one knew exactly how to go about all this, but we figured it out, each with a little help from the other, each in our own way.

Cheers to celebrating one another!

Happy Holidays,

R.M.
